Penneshaw Plus
Kangaroo Island is situated approximately 17km off the mainland of South Australia about 90km from the city centre of Adelaide. By road, the journey from Adelaide to Cape Jervis takes less than two hours passing through the very picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula. From Cape Jervis the crossing over Backstairs Passage by the SeaLink passenger and vehicle ferry takes about 45 minutes. Arrival is at Penneshaw located on the north-eastern end of Kangaroo Island.
Penneshaw offers country town hospitality and is recognized as the “Gateway to Kangaroo Island”.
From Penneshaw there are many interesting and varied attractions to excite tourists including the following:
- Flinders Chase Visitors Centre where the geological story of land formation, creatures and vegetation are graphically displayed.
- Unique coastal weathered formations at Admiral's Arch, the Remarkable Rocks and at Pennington Bay.
- Abundant wildlife and natural bush land settings in the Flinders Chase National Park.
- Up close tours of sea wildlife including sea lions, fur seals and little penguins.
- Spectacular coastline vistas, beautiful bays with white sandy beaches, historic lighthouses and ship wreck sites.
- Honey farms where honey from the rare Ligurian bees is produced.
- A eucalyptus distillery, lavender farms, wildlife sanctuaries, sheep cheese factory, fresh water crayfish, local wineries and food outlets.
- Local arts and craft galleries.
Of course besides the natural wilderness, breath taking views and other attractions on the island it is also well known for its fishing and boating.
Penneshaw is emerging as a prominent arts and craft centre for the island and has well documented stories of its early towns folk and artifacts housed in its museum and visitors centre. The town centre includes an hotel, business centre with internet facilities, food shops, supermarket, wine store plus local art and craft shops. It has an impressive golf course whilst Christmas Cove offers an excellent boat ramp and mooring facilities.
